    Consider the scene in which Coriolanus says goodbye to his family members. Whom is it most difficult for him to part with?

    In this scene, Coriolanus says goodbye to a number of friends and family: his associates Menenius and Cominius, his wife Virgilia and his son, and his mother Volumnia. Of these, the person who seems the most emotionally devastated by Coriolanus's exile is Volumnia. Coriolanus speaks most of all to her during this scene, showing the special regard and care which he feels for his mother.
