Act Three, second half

Big Mama weeps as the doctor leaves. She still protests that it must be untrue. Maggie makes gestures towards comforting her while she and Mae bicker, but Mae, Gooper, and Maggie all snap into focus when Big Mama says Brick will need to put himself together to "take hold of" the plantation. Gooper and Mae talk over each other to protest that that can't happen. Maggie calls Brick back in as Gooper and Mae insult him, then talks back angrily to both of them. Gooper becomes ever angrier and then says that he knows "how to protect my own interests."
