Cane Lesson Plan

Relationship to Other Books

Thematically, compare Cane to poetry by other Harlem Renaissance writers, such as Countee Cullen, Claude McKay, Langston Hughes, and others. Many of these writers were in direct conversation with each other. Less directly, the importance of setting to Cane makes it interesting to compare to Sherwood Anderson's Winesburg, Ohio and Dubliners by James Joyce. The vignette structure of those works is also comparable. Consider also Edgar Lee Masters's Spoon River Anthology, which similarly paints a picture of an entire community through detailed, persona-based depictions of individual characters.
