Day 1

Wordsworth's Poetical Works Lesson Plan

Reading Assignment, Questions, Vocabulary

Read the following poems. Read once for overall impression, and again with pencil in hand, marking formal features and the argument(s) and effects of the poem.

Romantic poetry frequently gives the impression of naturalness and effortlessness, but only does so with a great deal of effort and deliberate choices and revisions by the poet. Reading the poetry through a similar dual lens is important to your appreciation of it.

"I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud"

"Lines written in early spring"

"It is a beauteous evening..."

"To a Skylark"

"Lines composed a few miles above Tintern Abbey..."
