    In your opinion, should Jack know how to speak German if he's going to teach about Hitler? Why or why not? Why does he want his lessons to be kept secret?

    Regardless of what individual students think, it's clear that Jack needs to give the appearance of the ability to speak German. He cannot let people know about his lessons because that would undermine his authenticity. This desire reminds readers that Jack's authority is in some sense contrived, built on appearances rather than actual substance.

    In several of these chapters, Jack and Babette lose Wilder. Why do they keep losing him? Why do they find him so quickly? What do Wilder's dangers represent?
