    The main theme in the book is depression. Sequoyah, Rosemary and George, the three characters, are Native Americans suffering from depression. For instance, Sequoyah comes from a troubled family in which his mother is an alcoholic and irresponsible. George is also a troubled child who finds solace in Troutt’s home. Rosemary is deeply depressed when Troutt accuses her of stealing his money, and she kills herself.

Therefore, despite being a good man with a compassionate heart, Troutt deals in illegal business that taints his good reputation.
