Wadjda Imagery

Closed Shut

Wadjda enters the school in a composition that shows the green door clanging shut behind her. The door is framed by steel support beams. The imagery creates the understanding that these girls are being closed in by the teachings at the school.

A Dream

When Wadjda first sees the green bicycle, it appears as if it is gliding in the air. The imagery is set up so that the bicycle is on top of a car and a wall blocks the car, so we only see the bike. It makes the bicycle have a magical quality to it in a practical world.

Opening Shot

The opening shot of the film shows a young girl's feet in traditional shoes and socks with lace. We then see Wadjda's feet as she is called forward by the teacher. She wears Converse, Chuck Taylors. The imagery shows that Wadjda is set apart from the traditions of the Saudi culture.

Red Dress

Mother goes to a department store in order to purchase a dress that will allow her to stand out amongst the other women her husband's mother is looking to pair him with. al-Mansour creates a composition of Mother, wrapped in black coverings where we can only see her eyes looking at a red dress with jewels in the shop. The imagery shows the longing of Mother. Although she is already married and has a child with Father she still must compete for his love, as the Saudi culture allows him to marry another woman because Mother can no longer have children.
