What further information does Long John Silver's encounter with Tom reveal about his character? Did the violence of that encounter surprise you? Why or why not?

As before, some students may have anticipated that Long John Silver was a fearsome character, based on the warning given earlier by Captain Billy Bones to Jim Hawkins. However, others may still be surprised by his capacity for violence, or by the graphic vividness with which his murder is described.
