    What are the children learning in school? How else are they learning about themselves and their society? (ch. 7)

    The first grade class seems to have a lot of laughter but no learning. The second grade still uses the “Dewey” system and is not matched to Jean Louise’s level. Jem learns about Egypt and decides to emulate what he sees on hieroglyphics. But the children are learning more outside of school from their father and Calpurnia.

    They also are learning the ways of ladies and gentlemen in Maycomb by observing and emulating others. In chapter 9, Uncle Jack insists that Jean Louise wants “to grow up to be a lady,” although she disagrees and likes to wear overalls instead...
