Gray ruminates on the inevitiability of death.... its universitaly. He notes that death comes for everyone... the rich and poor alike, the famous, and the unknown. Death cannot be escaped.
In the end, the speaker says that one day the poet too will die and be buried in the same graveyard, and the epitaph that he wrote for himself would be inscribed on his tomb.
