  • 1963, he received John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Fellowship for Anthropology and Cultural Studies[9]
  • 1966, he received an honorary Doctor of Science degree from University of Colorado.
  • 1984, the Center for History of the American Indian at the Newberry Library was named for him.[8]
  • Also named in his honor was the library at Salish Kootenai College, a tribal college on the Flathead Reservation.[8]
