The Summer I Turned Pretty

The Summer I Turned Pretty The TV Adaptation

In June of 2022, a TV adaptation of The Summer I Turned Pretty was released on Amazon's Prime Video. Though Season Three was set to be released in August 2023, the SAG-AFTRA strikes have pushed the series' release date back.

The show, which Han helped direct, spans three seasons and 16 episodes; the three seasons mirror the fact that Han wrote the novel as the first of three in the Summer series—The Summer I Turned Pretty is followed by It's Not Summer Without You and We'll Always Have Summer. It appears that though the series changes certain elements from the novels, much of the plot and character interactions remain faithful to the written originals, perhaps as a result of Han being its executive producer.

In the first season, unlike in the first novel, Belly is caught in a love triangle with Conrad and Jeremiah. Though this love triangle does feature in the second and third books of the trilogy, the TV adaptation features the love triangle prominently, and early on. Season Two sees the love triangle with the two brothers continue, and the emergence of various other conflicts like Susannah's death and the imminent sale of the Cousins Beach house, which the characters try to prevent.

Season One was released to relative popular acclaim, receiving an 85% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and becoming the #1 show on Amazon Prime Video the weekend after its release. The books, following the popularity of the show, also saw a rise in popularity—the three novels of the series shot into Amazon's top three bestseller spots after the series debut. Season Two has a slightly lower approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, at 64%.
