"The Shroud" and Other Short Stories Lesson Plan

Relationship to Other Books

Students at this reading level are unlikely to have read many other works by major Indian authors; however, because Premchand is also frequently considered a realist writer, the teacher might also find it helpful for students to compare his stories to works by Mark Twain or John Steinbeck.

Additionally, the poetry of Rabindrath Tagore, and the letters and speeches of Indian political figures like Mahatma Gandhi and B.R. Ambedkar, can provide useful further insights into the cultural and social context in which Premchand wrote his stories.
