Devotion

As the plot builds in this fantasy series, affiliations are created among multiple characters while their loyalty to each other grows. The Shadow Rising is not exempted from this trope, as it entails different plotlines with four groups of characters. The journey to Aiel Waste sees Rand accompanied by Mat, Egwene, Moiraine, and the Aiel Aviendha; hence, they all resolve the tension in their devotion to Rand. For instance, Egwene steps aside from the pact and lets Elayne have a closer relationship with Rand. Instances of devotion are exhibited in the other groups with characters saving their associates or sacrificing themselves for a greater purpose.

Good versus Evil

The overarching motif in the series is the battle between good and evil with the conflict becoming more complex and drawn-out. The Dark One is the epitome of evil with his influence stretching across the land through his followers. On the other side of the spectrum is Rand who represents the good that remains and still fighting; case in point, he breaks the link Asmodean had to the Dark One. As the evil grows much stronger, more characters are tasked with facing this fight while surviving it too.

Power

The main motivation in this world is obtaining power from the force that drives the Wheel of Time. The different forces channel their power from two opposing sources or forces that fuel the war that persists. Following the events of The Dragon Reborn, Rand now wields the Callandor, asserting his position as the Dragon Reborn. As a leader ruling over the people loyal to him, he has to exert his authority by taking control and fulfilling the prophecies.
