The abbey (Symbol)
The abbey stands here as a symbol of shelter, which seems to be safe from the enemies. But the author shows that there are not shelters that would be completely never-failing: the La Mottes thought they would never be found in this Godforsaken place, but the problems and sad events happened with them even in this place.
Prayer (Symbol)
Adeline’s prayer stands here as a symbol of a source of energy, peace and braveness. The author vividly shows the contrast which is seen before and after Adeline’s prayer: all her fears get out, all problems disappear.
Mystique (Motif)
This motif is common for the gothic style. The atmosphere of mysteriousness is in the abbey, in people who meet our main characters, in the forest. But the mood of the other side of this forest seems to be antithetical: there the protagonists find their happiness, really kind people and clear, not mystic, reality.
