Study Objectives

If all of the elements of this lesson plan are employed, students will develop the following powers, skills, and understanding:

    Students will explore the undertones of homosexuality that run throughout the novel, and discuss how they pertain to Victorian perceptions of gay people.

    Students will consider the value of art, and what sorts of relationships one can have with art.

    Students will learn about the history of Faust and the Faustian bargain that has been adapted and reimagined numerous times throughout literary history.

    Students will consider issues of morality and ethics, and how people develop different moral compasses over the course of their lives.
