The Middleman and Other Stories Imagery

The Middleman and Other Stories Imagery

Imagery of clothes

Clothing description is present as an element of a different culture. Indian women, prominently in stories "A Wife's Story" and "The Tenant", wear their traditional clothes. This traditional clothing is showcasing their pride of their own culture but they are not immune when it comes to ignorance, as shown in the "A Wife's Story" where her clothing at the theater provokes this ignorance and insulting remarks.

Imagery of shore and water

Images of shore and water are present in "The management of Grief" when those who lost their loved ones in the plane crash go to the shore to mourn their loss. They came there to look at the water and think about how that same water took their husbands, wives and children. Shaila gets a false sense of hope because her sons' bodies are yet to be found. The same water gives her hope because she knows her sons are good swimmers, they might have gotten to some remote island, to some remote shore. She accepts that a parent's duty is to hope.
