    One of the biggest lessons Burnford wants her readers to learn is the value of patience and remaining optimistic. In the novel The Incredible Journey, Elizabeth remains calm and optimistic after realizing that their pets sneaked and ran away from Longride's compound. Elizabeth tells her brother and father to be patient because Luath, Bodger, and Tao will eventually return home. However, no one believes Elizabeth. The family is surprised after the pets arrive home after a few days. Therefore, the author enlightens readers not to lose hope when things go wrong but to remain positive and look forward to better things.

    The main theme in the novel is love that extends beyond boundaries. The harmony within James Hunter's family, friends, and pets is incredible. James encourages his children to love pets because that symbolizes their love for animals. In addition, Hunter's family lives in harmony with friends and neighbors. When Hunters' family leaves for England, Longridge volunteers to care for their pets. Longridge extends his love for pets. Bodger, the eldest male pet quickly loves Longridge and Mrs. Oaks.

    Why is Mrs. Oaks assuming that Mr. Longridge traveled with the pets?

    Mrs. Oaks works in Longridge’s compound and often takes care of the pets her master brought home. However, the mode of communication between Longridge and Mrs. Oaks is through letters. Longridge writes Mrs. Oaks a two-page letter informing her that he will take the pets. On the second page, Longridge clarifies that he will return the pets home and leave for an animal expedition at night. Unfortunately, Tao jumps on the table, pushing the second page to a fireplace. At night, Luath leads the other pets to sneak out. Mrs. Oaks reads the first page in the morning and assumes that Longridge went with the pets on the expedition.
