The Grand Highway (Le Grand Chemin) Summary

The Grand Highway (Le Grand Chemin) Summary

The movie opens up with a woman named Claire in Brittany, 1959. She is highly pregnant yet has to take care of her nine-year-old son alone, as her husband has newly abandoned her. Knowing she can’t take care of them both, she sends her son to Rouans, while she plans on giving birth in Paris. Claire leaves her son with her childhood friend, Marcelle, in her and her husbands’ home.

Claire’s son is named Louis, and the movie is an adventure of a lifetime for him. At first, he is shy and unsure of himself, yet he becomes more comfortable as he meets a Martine, the neighbor who is filled with equal amounts of curiosity as he is. He grows closer to Marcelle and Pelo but notices an unease between them. Marcelle is often sad, while Pelo is angry, and he gets even worse when he is drunk.

The problems in the house worsens, as Louis brings up unhappy memories. He understands what has happened as he sees the couple go to the grave of a child. Marcelle and Pelo are still marked and grieving of the loss of the child they were supposed to have ten years later. Louis runs away as the stress become to much, seeking refuge on the rooftop of a church. He is later found and taken back by his mother, after she has given birth. Louis then goes back, helping and saving Marcelle and Pelo’s relationship.
