The Fabliaux Essay Questions

Essay Questions

  1. 1

Who are the characters of ‘The Fabliaux’?

The fabliaux consists of a huge array of characters, including greedy clergy, cuckolded husbands and silly peasants, just as poor people, rascals, robbers, and prostitutes. Two gatherings are frequently singled out for analysis: the clergy and women. The status of laborers seems to shift, based on the group of spectators for which the fabliau was being composed. Poems that were apparently written for the honorability depict workers (villains in French) as dumb and awful, though those written for the lower classes regularly recount peasants showing signs of improvement of the clergy.

  2. 2

What is the subject matter of ‘The Fabliaux’?

The subject matter is regularly sexual: fabliaux are worried about the components of love forgot by poets who wrote in the more elevated classes. A portion of the subject matter in the fabliaux can be paralleled in different occasions and different nations: a large number of the plots originate from old stories, some have classical rapports, and some can be followed to Asian sources. Yet, a significant number of the stories are simple that they could have emerged immediately.
