The Changeling Background

The Changeling Background

The Changeling is a contemporary dark fantasy novel written by American author Victor LaValle. It was published on 13th June 2017 by Spiegel & Grau. The story combines elements of folklore, horror, and contemporary themes to create a modern-day fairy tale.

The novel follows the story of Apollo Kagwa, a rare book dealer and new father, who uncovers hidden family secrets. Following the birth of their son, his wife—Emma—starts exhibiting erratic behavior as she becomes convinced that a creature is after their child. Tragically, Emma disappears together with their son. Apollo experiences a descent into the supernatural after their disappearance. As he delves deeper into the mystery, he discovers a world of myth and magic that challenges his perceptions of reality.

LaValle is known for blending elements of horror and fantasy while exploring complex themes such as race, family, and the human experience. Kirkus Reviews wrote, “But though the narrative takes Apollo to “magical places, where the rules of the world are different,” he’s fully absorbed the notion that fairy tales are manifestations of our deepest real-world anxieties. In that regard, LaValle has successfully delivered a tale of wonder and thoughtful exploration of what it means to be a parent.”
