If all of the elements of this lesson plan are employed, students will develop the following powers, skills, and understanding:

  1. Speaking

    Over the course of the activities related to this novel, students should gain an understanding for the benefits and drawbacks of text written with significant amounts of dialect and idiom. They will become comfortable with speaking in small group and full class discussions. They will exercise their ability to interpret text through reading aloud Twain's texts, their own work, and the work of classmates.

  2. Listening

    Through groupwork and classwork, each student will become strengthened in the ability to listen to the arguments and ideas of others and formulate their own responses accordingly. Students will also get a sense of the rhythm of the particular language recorded by Twain.
