Chapter 21 - Electric Current and Direct-Current Circuits - Conceptual Questions - Page 754: 14

Answer

Beneficial for : Maglev trains, MRI machines, power transmission Not beneficial for: heaters, boilers, ovens, light bulbs.

Work Step by Step

Superconductivity is the forcing of absence of resistance, eliminating heat, light, and other emissions. Applications that would benefit are those that are hampered by resistance, mostly because of the heat dissipated. Such applications could be: - power transmission lines would not have to be so thick (heavy) and losses would be reduced. - powerful superconducting electromagnets that do need extra cooling (as they do now) could be used in Maglev trains, MRI machines. Applications that require resistance to do its job would not benefit from superconductivity: - heaters, boilers, ovens - incandescent light bulbs, etc.
