Chapter 3 - Structure and Stereochemistry of Alkanes - Problems - Page 108: Problem 3-14 c

Answer

The IUPAC name of the compound is 4-cyclobutylnonane

Work Step by Step

Rules for naming cycloalkanes 1. Count the number of carbon atoms in the ring. 2. If there are substituents attached to the ring, count the number of atoms in the substituents. If the number of carbon atoms in the ring is equal to or greater than the number of carbon in the longest susbtituent, the compound is named an alkyl-substituted cycloalkane. If the number of carbon atoms in the longest susbtituent is greater than the number of carbons in the ring, the compound is named as a cycloalkyl-substituted alkane. In this case, the longest susbtituent chain has 9 atoms and the ring has 4 atoms. So the compound is named as a cycloalkyl-substituted alkane.
