Chapter 1 - Sections 1.1-1.8 - Exercises - Review Questions: 4

A hypothesis is a tentative interpretation of an observed pattern or event. A law is a generalizable rule based on existing evidence that can be used to predict future outcomes. A theory is a model for both the outcomes and the cause of those outcomes within a system.

Work Step by Step

Hypotheses are tested experimentally to validate or disprove. Laws are already supported with scientific evidence but can still be tested. Theories can be supported with evidence, but true validation may be outside the scope of our ability to experiment.
