Work Step by Step

Classical mechanics studies continuous processes. If a classical mechanical model could be used to describe the nucleus of an atom, we would expect to see a wide range, a continuous spectrum of energies being released as radiation. However, quantum mechanics focuses on the discrete. We consider that quantum mechanics dominates for very little things, including nuclei. Atoms can only emit radiation in specific levels of energy. Only a quantum mechanical model is thus ideal for studying the phenomenon of radiation decay.
