Chapter 20 - Cell Communities: Tissues, Stem Cells, and Cancer - Questions - Page 726: Question 20-17

Answer

Although the chemical carcinogen will induce mutations in the DNA, it takes more than a few mutations to cause a cancer to develop.

Work Step by Step

The cancer takes so long to set in because there are multiple and copious mutations needed to bring about cancer. However, once cells start mutating, the mutated cells make more mutated cells and eventually one of the mutated cells will be cancerous because there are so many mutated cells.
