Chapter 20 - Cell Communities: Tissues, Stem Cells, and Cancer - Questions - Page 707: Question 20-7

Answer

A neuron is heavily protected and housed, where the epithelial cells are at the front lines of digestion in the gut.

Work Step by Step

The epithelial cells in the gut endure the stomach acids and potentially hazard or dangerous mutagens and compounds. As such, they need to be discarded and made over repeatedly to negate the spread of sick or damaged cells. Unlike an epithelial gut cell a neuron is insulated and protected from the harsh environment, and with good reason. The neuron is a part of a complex system of other neurons thought the body, all of which are difficult and extensive for the body to develop. In the event that a neuron dies, it is not easy for the body to recreate it as opposed to an epithelial cell in the gut.
