Altruism refers to the sacrifice of one's own well being in order to benefit another. This is paradoxical because the genes that would cause an organism to act in this way should be naturally selected against. For example, if an organism exposes itself to distract predators, the likelihood of this organism surviving and passing on the alleles for this altruism decreases significantly.
