Independent assortment of genes occur during meiosis, when pairs of homologous chromosomes separate to form haploid daughter cells. Recombination also occurs here when DNA is broken down and rearranged. These processes demonstrate how genes can assort independently from other genes. Elinor Carothers' experiments worked with a chromosome without a homolog and another chromosome with easily-distinguishable homologs. Since chromosomes assorted themselves independently, the four types of gametes should have been observed to occur at equal frequencies.
