Answer

7. What function do keratinized and nonkeratinized stratified squamous epithelia have in common? Both keratinized and nonkeratinized stratified squamous epithelium prevent abrasion and penetration by pathogenic organisms. What is the structural difference between these two? Keratinized squamous epithelia have a surface covered with a layer of compact dead cells without nuclei. This layer of dead cells prevents water loss through the skin. How is this structural difference related to a functional difference between them? Both keratinized and nonkeratinized stratified squamous epithelia prevent abrasion and penetration by pathogenic organisms. Because of its outer layer of compact dead cells, keratinized stratified squamous epithelium also prevents water loss through the skin.
