Self-tolerance results from a process called clonal deletion, in which lymphocytes programmed to react against self-antigens die.
Clonal deletion is one form of negative selection. In clonal deletion, self-reactive T cells die and the macrophages phagocytize them. Another form of negative selection is anergy, in which the T cells remain alive but are unresponsive.
