The adult spinal cord ends as a cone (conus medullaris) at about the level of the second lumbar vertebra (L2-- at a higher level than the end of vertebral column itself. The spinal nerve roots caudal to the end of the spinal cord constitute the cauda equina ( horse's tail).The filum terminale connects the conus medullaris to the spinal dura which attaches to the coccyx.
