Chapter 12 - Section 12.3 - Supportive Cells (Neuroglia) - Before You Go On - Page 447: 8

Answer

The difference between neuroglial cells and neurons are: 1.Neurons can produce impulses whereas neuroglial cells can't produce impulse 2.Neurons are for transmitting signals whereas glial cells are for supporting and protecting neurons. There are 6 types of neuroglial cells, they are: 1. Oligodendrocytes 2. Ependymal cells 3. Microglial cells 4. Astrocytes 5. schwann cells 6. Satellite cells

Work Step by Step

1.Oligodendrocytes :It has a bulb shaped body with many finger like processes. function: It helps in formation of myelin Sheath around the neurons in CNS which acts as a shock absorber 2.Ependymal cells:They are cuboid shaped epithelium like cells lining The ventricles of brain function : It produces cerebrospinal fluid. 3 . Microglial cells:These are small macrophages developed from the monocytes. function: They help in the phagocytosis. 4.Astrocytes:These are star shaped cells with processes function : they form the blood brain barrier 5.Schwan cells : These are present in Peripheral nervous system Functions : they form the myelin sheath around the neurons of peripheral nervous system.
