Chapter 11 - Muscular Tissue - Study Guide - True or False - Page 434: 9

Answer

9. False

Work Step by Step

A muscle fiber produces most of its ATP at this time by anaerobic respiration. Muscle glycogen is broken down to glucose which is metabolized to produce pyruvic acid and ATP. Two molecules of ATP are produced per molecule of glucose metabolized ( compared with 36 in aerobic cellular respiration ). Lactic acid is not used by the muscle fiber, but is transmitted to the blood for transport to the liver. Although this process assists the muscles in ATP production under circumstances of intense muscle activity, accumulation of lactic acid in muscles cause fatigue.
