Chapter 10 - Section 10.4 - Muscles Acting on the Shoulder and Upper Limb - Before You Go On - Page 355: 18

Answer

The four rotator cuff muscles are the supraspinatus, the infraspinatus, the teres minor and the subscapularis. The supraspinatus lies in the supraspinous fossa above the spine of the scapula The infraspinatus muscle is located in the infraspinous fossa below the scapular spine.

Work Step by Step

The teres minor lies inferior to the infraspinatus. Its origin is on the inferior angle of the scapula. The subscapularis occupies the the subscapular fossa on the anterior surface of the scapula, between scapula and the ribs . Tendons of the rotator cuff muscles merge with the joint capsule of the shoulder as they cross the shoulder on their way to the humerus. The tendons insert into the proximal end of the humerus and form a connective tissue and form an incomplete band ( or cuff around the shoulder joint -- the so called rotator cuff (band). The rotator cuff reinforces the shoulder joint capsule, and holds the head of the humerus in the glenoid cavity. Circumduction action, as in baseball pitching, or severe physical trauma, easily injures the rotator cuff muscles of the shoulder. Especially vulnerable to injury is the tendon of the supraspinatus muscle.
