Chapter 9 - Cumulative Review - Page 695: 17

Answer

a) $\frac{5}{7}$ or $5:7$ b) $\frac{7}{24}$ or $7:24$

Work Step by Step

A ratio is how many of the first number/thing there is to another number/thing. So, for an example, if the ratio of boys to girls was in a class was 1:3, there would be 1 boy for every 3 girls in the class. Ratios can be written with a : between the numbers or as a fraction. So, if we are asked to write the ratio of the width of the rectangle to it's length, the numerator of the fraction is 5 (the width) and the denominator is 7 (the length). Then, to find the ratio of the length to the perimeter of the rectangle, the length is the numerator and the perimeter is the denominator. (To find the perimeter, add all the sides together, 7+7+5+5=24.)
