Chapter 5 - Test - Page 406: 22

Answer

MEAN: 12.625 MEDIAN: 12.5 MODE: 12 and 16

Work Step by Step

First, put all the numbers in numerical order from least to greatest: 8, 10, 12, 12, 13, 14, 16, 16 MEAN: To find the mean, add the numbers together and then divide by the number of numbers. 8 + 10 + 12+ 12 + 13 + 14 + 16 + 16 = 101 There are 8 numbers in this set, so divide 101 by 8: $\frac{101}{8}$ = 101 $\div$ 8 = 12.625 MEDIAN: The median is the middlemost number. Because we have 8 numbers, there is no single middle number. There are, however, two middle numbers. The median is therefore the mean of the two middle numbers. Here, the middlemost numbers are 12 and 13. Our median is (12 + 13) $\div$ 2 = 25 $\div$ 2 = 12.5. MODE: The mode is the number(s) that appear most often. There are two 12s and two 16s. As these numbers both appear most often, 12 and 16 are both the mode.
