$\frac{2x+3y}{x+1}$ for $x=-2$ and $y=4$ substitute -2 for each x and 4 for each y $=\frac{2\times(-2)+3\times4}{(-2)+1}$ complete any grouped operations first - remember that the numerator and denominator of a fraction are each considered grouped $=\frac{(-4)+12}{-1}$ within each group, first complete multiplication and division in order left to right, then addition and subtraction left to right $=\frac{8}{-1}$ finish with division - fractions mean divide the numerator by the denominator - a positive divided by a negative is a negative! $=-8$
