The State of Padmavatti as She Played Ball

The maid of Padmavatti was looking for her and she saw her (Padmavatti) playing with a ball outside. The maid described the state that Padmavatti was in as, ' Ah! here comes the princess playing with a ball. The jewels in her ears are turned upwards, the exertion has spangled her brow within drops of perspiration, so that fatigue lends a charm to her face.' The type of imagery in the description is visual imagery.

The visual imagery has been built by the use of descriptive words such as the jewels are turned upwards and the drops of perspiration on her face. The imagery is so vivid such that the reader can mental picture the state of Padmavatti when her maid found her.

The Noble Lady Avanti

While the Lady Avanti was staying with Padmavatti, the maid went out to look for her so as to help with the preparation of the wedding of Padmavatti to Udayana. The maid described the Lady Avanti as, ' Ah! there she is, sitting on a stone bench under the priyangu creeper. There she sits wearing a graceful garment and unardoned, her mind intent on distant thought like a digit of the moon obscures by mist.' The imagery in this description is visual imagery. This is because the description is of the physical appearance of the Lady Avanti.

The imagery in the description has been built by the use of adjectives. These adjectives include graceful that the maid used to describe the garments that the Lady Avanti wore and stone to describe the material that the bench the lady was sitting on was made of.

The King's Description of Vasavadatta

The King Udayana was sorrowful and nostalgic because he thought that his beloved wife Vasavadatta was dead. He described her as, '... but my thoughts fly back to Avanti's daughter, worthy daughter of a worth sire, to her whose slender frame was consumed by fire at Lavanaka, like a lotus plant blasted by the frost. ' The imagery in the description is visual imagery for the narrator is describing his wife's physical features.

The imagery has been built by the use of adjectives and a simile. The simile used is,'...like a lotus plant blasted by the frost. 'This simile likens how Vasavadatta was burned alive to how a lotus plant is consumed by frost. The adjective used is slender to describe her figure.

The War Items

The King of Udayana intended to go to war with Aruni. He described his equipment for the war as, ' I shall see that Aruni, adept in dreadful deeds and in the battlefield, surging like a mighty ocean with huge elephants and horses with a lashing spray of arrows on the wing. I will destroy him.' The imagery used in the description is visual imagery. This is because the reader can visualize the extent of the king's military equipment from their description.

The narrator has built visual imagery from the use of adjectives. The adjectives include huge to describe the size of the elephants and the horses and mighty to describe the ocean.
