As a work of nonfiction, Stay True explores the Asian-American experience in the '80s and '90s, including cultural-generational clashes between parents and children, the blanket of the term Asian American as not a one-size-fits-all category, prejudice and racism, and exclusion in mass media and entertainment. These are experiences that many students will be familiar with, though it may be helpful to discuss some of these topics beforehand to provide a more intimate context for the memoir.
