Tristran captures the star with a magical silver chain—and as soon as she realizes what he's done, her hatred for him grows.

the narrator, "Stardust"

Not knowing that Yvaine is a person, Tristran captures her, which she sees as enslavement, and starts to hate him. At this point Tristran is only set upon his goal to earn the endearment of his crush Victoria, so Yvaine is a mere object made for fulfilling that desire, which is in a stark contrast to how the tables will turn later on.

He was valiant in battle, though his left hand was scarred and of little use, and a cunning strategist; he led his people to victory against the Northern Goblins when they closed the passes to travelers; he forged a lasting peace with the Eagles of the High Crags, a peace that remains in place until this day.

The ending shows that Tristan proved to be a brave and strategic leader of Stormhold, leading his people into prosperity and peace. He came a long way from being a boy that only wanted to gain a girl’s heart, and his scars from the past do not stop him in his victories.

"I hope that your sisters will not be too hard on you, when you return to them without it."

Yvaine, "Stardust"

The main antagonist of the novel, the witch-queen who wanted to cut out Yvaine’s heart to share it with her sisters fails in her mission. Despite the cruelty, Yvaine’s words still show some compassion towards the evil witch, knowing the complications that come with having family. The fate that awaits the witch-queen after returning to her sisters is probably not for the faint of heart.
