Spare Characters

Spare Character List

Prince Harry

Prince Harry is the author and narrator of Spare, his memoir. Born to Prince Charles and Princess Diana, Harry was the couple's youngest child. Harry's older brother is William, Prince of Wales, who will become the King of England upon the death of his father. On the other hand, Harry will never become King; he is a "spare" and will always be relegated to second fiddle. Those feelings of inadequacy were exacerbated for Harry after the death of his beloved mother, Diana, something which deeply traumatized him.

Over time, Harry learned to deal with the grief surrounding the death of his mother. He joined the military and according to him, played an integral role in the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. He also was a working member of the Royal Family of Britain. Over time, Harry grew dissatisfied with his role in the Royal Family and decided to marry Meghan Markle, an American actress. After marrying Meghan, whom he loves dearly, Harry decided to break away from the Royal Family, who he felt had wrong him and his wife.

Meghan Markle

Meghan Markle plays a significant role in Spare. As Harry's girlfriend and later, wife, Meghan played an important role in Harry's life. According to Harry, she was responsible for shaping his life and turning him into a better and more well-rounded person. She is also Harry's support system; in times of tremendous darkness and despair for Harry, she was there to support him. And in equally good times, like during the birth of their children, Meghan was there for Harry as well. Not only that, before meeting Prince Harry and becoming a member of the British Royal Family, Markle was a famous actress in her own right.

Prince (now King) Charles

Prince Charles (who has now become King after the death of Queen Elizabeth II) has played an important role in Harry's life and in the context of Spare. It was Charles, Harry alleges, that gave Harry's book its name. "I now have an heir and a spare," Charles allegedly said after the birth of Harry, his second son. This angered Harry and made him resent his father, who he feels both positive and negative things about. After all, his father is a complicated man who has done both good and bad things throughout his life.

Queen Elizabeth II

Queen Elizabeth II is Harry's grandmother. The ruler and monarch of Great Britain and the head of the British Royal Family, Queen Elizabeth II played an important role in Harry's life. When his mother died, she was there to support him. She helped raise the boy and grew quite fond of young Harry. Before her death, Harry and the Queen were quite close. And her death caused Harry tremendous grief.

Diana, Princess of Wales

Although dead, Diana, Princess of Wales loomed large over the book. Diana is Harry's mother and died in the 1990s as a result of the paparazzi following her. She adored Harry and doted over him and William. Harry was, in turn, incredibly close to her and was destroyed when his mother died. He had lost the person who had cared most about him. The person who had loved him unconditionally and had supported him through thick and thin was now gone.
