Despite the ideals of communism being a presumed benefit for everyone, we can see from the experiences of Heng and his family that this is untrue. Indeed, it is much like capitalism, with the rich excelling and the poor kept as labourers.
Heng’s Family
Heng’s family initially are presented as the perfect supporters of Mao’s rule and unequivocally support the party. But this is shattered when it is revealed that his mother was a critic of the party in the past.
America
America is truly presented as the land of opportunities for Heng, as it is where he escapes the regime that has constrained his whole life and where he starts his new life.
