Every classroom is different, but the questions of racism, colonialism, and whiteness that Orwell explores have tremendous contemporary resonance. These lessons and activities provide many different approaches to the text; select those that best suit the strengths and interests of your own class. Bear in mind that the essay, though progressive in many ways, still conveys anti-Asian racism, and that it's necessary to scaffold this with the class.

The thought questions in this lesson plan provide material and ideas that students can use to write short original essays and to develop their powers of analysis.
