Q & A Irony

Q & A Irony

Ram's interrogation

During the interrogation at the beginning of the novel, the Commissioner allows Ram to stay in the room while he has a chat with the show’s producers because he thinks that as a simple waiter, Ram does not understand English. Ironically, however, Ram understands their conversation perfectly but chooses to play dumb.

The game show

During the conversation with the Commissioner, the producers of the game show reveal that it was supposed to follow a script where the first winner was not due for at least eight months. Ironically, Ram won the grand prize in an early episode of the show, so now the production company is not yet ready to pay out the money, so they need the Commissioner’s help to prove Ram cheated on the show.

The confession statement

When Ram is tortured, he is presented with a confession statement. However, signing it would be ironic because it reads, “I am making this statement in full control of my senses and without any undue pressure from anyone,” which is the opposite of what is actually happening.

Filling the void

Ram is happy to be taken away from the orphanage by the Thomases so they could fill the void in their lives. Ironically, “within three days of taking me home and even before I could be christened, Mr Thomas discovered that the void in his wife’s life had already been filled” because she has an affair with a tailor.

Maman

When Ram and Salim are taken in by Maman, they believe that he runs a school for disabled children because he has a good heart. However, they soon find out that he forces the disabled children to beg for money, which he and his henchmen keep--which is the opposite of what they have expected.
