Pod

Pod Analysis

Fundamentally, Pod is a novel about a young person coming to terms with her differences and her identity in a difficult world rapidly being changed by climate change. In the novel, Ea (the main character and protagonist) is a spinning dolphin who can't spin because of her disability. Because of her disability, she is ostracized by her pod (or family), causing her emotional turmoil. She leaves her pod and discovers the greater world around her, where she discovers that she can be herself and still be loved. In this, the novel reveals one of its most significant themes: self-acceptance.

After Ea leaves her pod, she links up with a group of other dolphins. Although they are initially apprehensive about taking Ea in, Ea ingratiates herself quickly with her new family. This shows the power and importance of acceptance when dealing with someone who has a disability (or someone that doesn't). However, Ea's positive feelings don't last. Her new pod is attacked by a group of orcas, leaving Ea as the only survivor. Instead of wallowing in her misery as some do after experiencing a traumatic event, Ea springs to action, reflecting the power of character and the strength of her resolve.

Although she is injured, Ea finds strength in those around her. She recovers from her physical and mental injuries with a newfound passion for life. She has learned about the human world and has a new perspective on her life. She is a more whole, fulfilled person.

Pod is a powerful novel that will stay with readers long after they finish reading it. It is a story about the importance of family, friends, and community. It is also a story about the power of love and how it can be used to overcome all obstacles, no matter how insurmountable they may seem.
