    What reasons does Irene have for suspecting the affair? Do you agree with her conclusion?

    Irene initially suspects the affair when Brian tells her he invited Clare to Irene’s tea party without checking with Irene first. Later, she witnesses a look of possible tenderness between the two. Aside from these incidents, Irene has little reason to suspect an affair except for Brian’s continual moodiness. It seems Irene’s conclusion that Clare and Brian are involved is rash and premature.
