Luma Mufleh

The coach of the Fugees, she is originally from a wealth family from Amman, Jordan, but she moved to the United States for university and decided not to return to her home country after graduating. She did not have formal training or experience with refugees or children, but she was able to create a soccer program that gave young refugee boys and their families a new community.

Beatrice Ziaty

She is a Liberian woman who is the mother of Fugees members Jeremiah and Mandela.

Jeremiah Ziaty

He is a Liberian player on the Under Thirteens Fugees.

Grace Balegamire

He is a Congolese player on the Under Thirteens Fugees.

Bienvenue (“Bien”) Ntwari

He is a Burundian player on the Under Thirteens Fugees.

Lee Swaney

He is the Mayor of Clarkston who lets Luma temporarily use Armistead Field for soccer practices before taking away that use without explanation.

Tracy Ediger

A volunteer in the Clarkston refugee community through a Christian organization called Jubilee Partners, she helps Luma with the Fugees by providing English lessons, driving the bus to practices and games, and generally assisting administratively.

Prince

He is a Liberian player on the Under Fifteens Fugees until he refuses to cut his hair short and is not allowed to join the team for their second season.

Fornatee

A Liberian player on the Under Fifteens Fugees team, he does not get put back on the team after the season is cancelled because he refuses to try out again.

Mandela Ziaty

He is a Liberian player on the Under Fifteen Fugees. During the Fugees's second season, he feels pulled between his team and his Liberian friends. He is eventually kicked off the team for his bad attitude.

Kanue Biah

A Liberian player on the Under Fifteens Fugees, he is passionate about continuing the season after Luma cuts it off early, and he is the one who convinces her to hold tryouts again. He is responsible for a lot of family chores, such as cooking, because he lives only with his uncle who holds two jobs.

Natnael

He is a member of the Under Fifteens Fugees and a close friend of Mandela.

Qendrim Bushi

He is a Kosovar/Albanian member of the Under Thirteens Fugees.

Alex Ntwari

He is the oldest son of Generose and responsible for taking care of his siblings Bienvenue, Ive, and Alyah while his mother works. He plays on the Under Fifteens Fugees team.

Idwar and Robin Dikori

They are Sudanese players on the Under Thirteens Fugees. Luma thinks of them as secret weapons because they are very young and small but run fast. Their mother and sisters were killed in a car crash in the United States.

Warren St. John

Author of Outcasts United, he himself is part of the story since he spent a good deal of time with the team and interviewed community members to write a New York Times article on the Fugees. He decided to write Outcasts United after the article gained widespread interest and popularity.
