Introduction to On Liberty

In the century and a half since his death in the late 19th century, John Stuart Mill's "On Liberty" has become one of his most well-known and acclaimed works.

"On Liberty" expresses, in a more or less concise fashion, Mill's most important ideas and sentiments as a political philosopher. Many of these notions, including those about the importance of the freedom of speech and free self-expression, have become foundational to contemporary discussions of rights and liberties today in America.

By reading "On Liberty," students can both become acquainted with Mill and attain a deeper understanding of ideas that they may otherwise take for granted.
